How Technology Can Be Freeing

Norman introduces the reader to both sides of the argument about the effects technology may have on humans' cognitive abilities. One side might argue that technology only appears to make us look intelligent. Without having taken the time to learn how to live without the technology, we are incapable of effectively accomplishing the activities we've come to rely on technology to help us accomplish. The other side of the argument, the side that Norman took in The Design of Everyday Things, is that reliance on technology is a benefit to humanity. Technology, which the human can choose to use or avoid (and at least currently has power over), can help us to overcome biological limitations. For example, the calculator is a technology that helps us perform complex arithmetic faster than we can do in our minds. Technology such as computers can help us accomplish activities faster than we could do unaided by technology, freeing us to spend time on things of more importance.

The objective of my semester project is to design a solution for clubs and organizations that will help improve communication. Clubs and organizations currently face a variety of challenges when it comes to communication. For instance, attendance at events is low because communicating about activities through advertising is a challenge. Scheduling events that do not conflict with our events is a challenge because of a lack of communication that occurs between clubs and organizations. Technology can help to solve such challenges related to communication by making it easier to do effectively. This would free clubs from having to invest time into figuring out ways to communicate well. Instead, clubs could  put time into pursuing activities that they enjoy. After all, none of the clubs we spoke with claimed that there purpose is to figure out how to host events that do not conflict with other events.
